Types of pest
Which Parasites Affect Dogs
Dogs come into contact with various parasites in nature and in everyday life. Ticks, fleas and mites are the most common pests. Mosquitoes, sand flies, biting lice and sucking lice also occur depending on the region and time of year. A good anti-parasite spray covers multiple types of pest, so there is no need to switch between products.
Ticks
Ticks are the most well-known parasites in dogs. They sit in grass, bushes and along woodland edges, waiting for a host. A tick spray for dogs can help ensure that ticks no longer recognise your dog as a suitable host. Plant-based tick sprays use the repellent effect of essential oils.
As a preventive tick treatment, application every two to three days is recommended during the active season from spring to autumn. Consistent tick protection forms the basis of any parasite defence.
Fleas
Flea infestations are one of the most common problems in dogs. Fleas lay their eggs in the dog's surroundings: in bedding, carpets and upholstered furniture. Plant-based sprays containing geraniol and essential oils can help keep pests at bay and can be applied directly.
A flea spray for dogs works best when it treats both the animal and the environment at the same time. Plant-based sprays containing geraniol and essential oils can repel pests. They can be used without any waiting period.
Mites
Mites in dogs are often overlooked because symptoms only become visible at a later stage. Harvest mites are particularly common in late summer and autumn, targeting thin-skinned areas on the paws, belly and ears.
A mite spray for dogs, applied before going outdoors, can reduce contact with the larvae. Ear mites settle in the ear canal ... if there is a heavy infestation, it is best to have this checked by a vet.
Other Parasites: Mosquitoes, Sand Flies, Biting Lice
In addition to the three most common pests, dogs can also be affected by mosquitoes, sand flies, biting lice and sucking lice. Sand flies are particularly prevalent in the Mediterranean and overseas. Biting lice occasionally occur in dogs that have frequent contact with other dogs. An anti-parasite spray with a broad spectrum of action covers these pests as well.
Plant-based vs chemical
Plant-Based Parasite Spray or Chemical Solution?
When it comes to parasite protection, owners can choose between chemical and plant-based products. Both have their place, but they differ fundamentally in how they work.
How Plant-Based Solutions Work
Plant-based parasite sprays can alter the scent of the animal. As a result, ticks and fleas may no longer recognise the dog as a suitable host and avoid it. Active ingredients such as neem oil, geraniol, eugenol and linalool combine their repellent effects. Thiamine (vitamin B1) provides additional support. The mechanism is based on repelling rather than killing.
Advantages Over Chemical Products
Chemical spot-on treatments are based on synthetic insecticides. Plant-based sprays do without these active ingredients. Dogs with sensitive skin, puppies, and owners looking for a gentler solution for their pet benefit from the milder approach. However, a plant-based spray needs to be reapplied more frequently than a chemical treatment: every two to three days during the season, rather than once a month.
Application
How to Apply a Parasite Spray to Your Dog Correctly
The effectiveness of a plant-based product depends on consistent application. Using the spray only sporadically leaves gaps in your dog's protection.
Applying to the Coat
Spray the anti-parasite spray generously over your dog, including against the direction of the fur. The belly, legs, back and neck should all be treated, as ticks and mites tend to bite in these areas.
For dogs that do not like being sprayed directly, indirect application works well: spray a few pumps onto your hand or a cloth and rub it into the coat against the direction of the fur. Applying by hand reaches all areas just as effectively.
Treating the Environment
Transport crates, carpets, dog blankets and resting spots can become home to fleas, larvae and mites. An anti-parasite spray that also works as an environment spray treats both your dog and your living space at the same time.
Plant-based sprays with environment protection treat your dog and home at the same time as a preventive measure, since flea eggs and larvae can survive in textiles.
Reapplying Regularly
Spring and summer (active parasite season): every two to three days. Year-round as basic protection: every seven to fourteen days. After bathing, the application should be renewed, as water washes off plant-based active ingredients.
